On September 5, 2006, Bellevue Hospital Center celebrated the opening of a new $3.9 million Thoracic Surgical Laboratory. Funding for the project was provided through City Hall. The 1,100 SF laboratory suite, located on the 15th floor of the main hospital building, includes two faculty offices, laboratory space for eight research stations, and a “clean” room. The laboratory is fully equipped to carry out all basic molecular biology and cell culture assays. Two class-II bio-safety cabinets and four carbon dioxide incubators, located in the clean room, are ideally suited for cell culture work. Most of the space in the lab is reserved for the storage of mesothelioma and lung cancer specimens. The deep freezers, backed up by a dedicated emergency electrical system, provide capacity to store over 2,000 archived specimens.
