Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr. and representatives from North Central Bronx Hospital unveiled a new state-of-the-art digital mammography system in October, purchased through a New York City capital budget allocation of $430,000 from the Borough President’s Office. “The new equipment is crucial to the health of women. It will provide better diagnosis and early detection which will save lives. The Bronx now has the best technology...It gives me great pleasure to provide this state-of-the-art equipment to our residents here in the Bronx,” Carrion said. The full-field mammography system uses new x-ray technology in the diagnosis of breast cancer. The image is collected electronically and displayed on a computer monitor. Some advantages include greater diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. The new technology reduces exam time, creates faster image acquisition, and uses lower x-ray dosage with a comparable image quality and greater efficiency. As part of his Fit Now campaign, launched last year, Borough President Carrion announced the allocation of over $1 million for the acquisition of mammography equipment at NCBH and Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center to combat the high rates of breast cancer in the borough. The new digital mammography system will augment the hospitals’ ability to provide mammography services to women.
