On August 11th, 2005, WOODHULL MEDICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH CENTER celebrated the completion of renovated units to house the expanded Well-Baby Nursery, Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), and Postpartum services.
The new nursery and NICU (7,725 SF) are located on the 7th floor, contiguous to the new postpartum unit and adjacent to the recently renovated Labor and Delivery Suite. The Well-Baby Nursery and NICU consist of an Intermediate and Continuing Care Unit of six (6) beds, a Neonatal Intensive Care suite of four (4) beds, and a Well-Baby Nursery Suite of fifteen Neonatal and Postpartum care (15) bassinets. These units have a central area that serves as a control station.
The 6,875 SF Postpartum Suite, is located on the 7th floor, and replaces the existing 3-bedded rooms with all new private bedrooms to address the lack of auditory privacy cited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The modernized suite contains 15 patient rooms, featuring custom millwork and a home-like furniture and finishes. Each 180 SF patient room contains a television, lounge chair, coffee table, ward robe and night table/desk.
Designed by Hillier Architecture, the layout of the units enables fluid visitor, patient, and staff circulation and addresses the strict security required for these services. The new suites were constructed, equipped and outfitted at a total cost of $6.2 million, financed with HHC bonds and City Council funds, and managed by the facility's Construction Office.
