CONEY ISLAND HOSPITAL, Southern Brooklyn’s leading healthcare center began a two-phase Major Modernization Project in 2000. The goal of this project is to improve services to the community by replacing outdated facilities, consolidating services on the 11-acre campus and upgrading the settings for the delivery of high-quality healthcare. The project includes constructing new state-of-the-art buildings and modernizing existing facilities.
Phase I (Bed Tower)
Phase I was the construction of a 7-story, 126,000-square-foot Inpatient Pavilion. The New Bed Tower features 222 inpatient beds with private and semi-private rooms and a new 9,500-square-foot Pediatric, Adolescent Medicine Treatment Center and an Obstetrical Prenatal Care Unit located on the ground floor. The new pavilion is connected to the existing hospital building on every floor but one, allowing for convenient access from inpatient to outpatient services within each specialty.
Phase I also included a new cardiac catheterization suite, and a new 6,500-square-foot ambulatory diagnostics clinic. Coney Island Hospital’s cardiac catheterization suite is located on the 6th floor of the Main Building’s north wing, which is adjacent to both the existing Cardiology Department and the Cardiac Care Unit in the new building. The ambulatory diagnostics clinic is located on the first floor of the Main Building.
Phase II of the Major Modernization Project, currently in planning, will include a new 8-story building which will house the Emergency Department, a state-of-the-art Surgery Center, a new Radiology/Imaging suite and Behavioral Health Care Services, including 75 inpatient beds, complemented by ambulatory care programs; the renovation of the existing Main Building focusing on an inpatient rehabilitation unit, two medical/surgical units and general ambulatory care services; the upgrade of the energy plant; and the demolition of the Hammett Pavilion and Building “6”. The facility is located in a hurricane force #1 Slosh Zone, and as such the ground floor of the proposed new building will be used for parking and an EMS garage.
